Things To Consider When Putting An Entry Door In Your Garage

Posted on: 9 November 2022

A garage entry door offers convenience and allows you to go in and out of the garage without having to open the large overhead doors. There are different kinds of doors to choose from and things to consider when selecting the right entry door for your needs.

Attached Garages

The entry door on most attached garages allows you to leave the garage and enter your home. This is convenient if you carry items in or take them out to your car regularly. However, there is the concern that if someone gets into the garage, they have a direct path to enter the home.

The entry door between the house and the garage should remain closed and locked to ensure security, and it is an excellent item to use a solid core door without glass. The entry door between the garage and the house is typically the same size as a standard door used in your home, so it is easy to find one that you like and will fit in the spot.

You can add a security sensor to that door if you have a security system and a deadbolt lock to ensure it is secure and you or a family member are the only ones that can open it. The garage entry door is a good candidate for a keypad or smart lock that requires a code to eliminate the need for a key while keeping the door secure.

Unattached Garages

The entry door used in an unattached garage is often on the side of the building closest to the house. Often the door is positioned so you can come out of the garage and go into a back or side door to the home.

The door into the garage needs to be secure to keep would-be thieves out of the garage, so avoid doors with glass panes. Installing a new entry door is very straightforward, and you can select one that offers the security you need and then have a door service install it.

The new door should be robust and weathertight but does not need a lot of extra features. If you want to add security to the door, you can add more than one lock to the door and key both locks the same, so you only need one key to get in. Smart locks can be a good feature for garage entry doors because all you need is the code to get in, and it can be quickly changed if the old code is compromised.

No matter how you secure your garage entry door, make sure that the door is shut and locked when you are not in the garage. A door left open is an invitation for problems, and taking a second to lock it can make all the difference.
