How to Tell Whether Your Garage Door Needs Repairs

Posted on: 13 July 2021

While homeowners often spot cosmetic damage to their garage door rather quickly, it is not uncommon for them to overlook warning signs that their garage door needs mechanical repairs. In their earliest stages, these warning signs can be relatively mild. The problem is, while cosmetic damage may be easily detectable it will rarely result in a safety hazard. Mechanical issues on the other hand can result in your garage door falling and potentially injuring you or someone you care about.

Take the time to review the information below so you can spot the warning signs.

Your Garage Door Is Uneven

Nowadays most people rely on automatic garage door openers to open and close their garage doors. The problem with this is that many people simply click the button on their garage door opener as they approach their home and then pay little attention to what the door looks like as it is opening. The reason this is such a problem is that one tell-tale sign that your garage door needs repair is that it will be uneven during the open and closing process.

When your garage door opens and closes, it relies on springs along each side of the door to help hold the weight of the door. As these springs begin to wear out over time one side of the door will open slightly faster than the other side. This results in the door being uneven. While this issue will be hard to detect at first, it will become more and more noticeable as the damage to your garage door continues to worsen. Eventually, the spring on one or both sides of your garage door will break and result in a serious safety hazard. Therefore it is important to call in a professional garage door repair contractor as soon as you notice that your door is not perfectly level when opening or closing.

Your Garage Door Is Noisy

Proper lubrication is another key part of keeping your garage door functioning properly. Over time the lubrication on your door will wear thin and need to be replaced. One warning sign of this problem is that your garage door will start to become louder. You may hear squealing, grinding, or rattling noises coming from the door during both the opening and closing processes.

If you are typically listening to your car radio or talking on your cell phone when you arrive home, these distractions can cause you to overlook an increase in the amount of noise your garage door is making. Eliminating or at least minimizing these distractions can help you to quickly identify potential problems with your garage door so that you can have them repaired before the damage is allowed to worsen.
