How to Help With Your Garage Door Installation

Posted on: 29 July 2020

New garage door installation is a fairly simple process, but should never be completed on your own. Having the assistance of a friend or family member is a great way to make sure you are completing the job as safely as possible. If you are unable to work on your garage door at all, hiring it out is always the best and safest option.

When it comes time for garage door installation, follow these simple steps to help your installation crew get the door up quickly.

Release the Tension

Before you begin any work on your new garage door installation, be sure to release the tension in the springs. With the door completely closed, use pliers and a steel rod to slowly release the tension one spring at a time. This step in the garage door installation can be the most dangerous part of the whole project, so make sure you are fully aware of what you are doing or leave it in the hands of the professionals.

Remove the Old Door

Once your spring is safely released, it is time to remove the old door. Take the door off the tracks and rollers and remove the garage door opener as well. Be sure to place the door in a truck or out of the way so there are no opportunities for injury to your pets or small children. Remember, your door is not safe for pets or kids to play on, so keep them away while you are working on your garage door.

Place New Door Hardware

The next step is to take the hardware for your new garage door and install it on your house. Be sure to get the hardware on as tight as you can to keep the new door from making any loud noises or malfunctioning. The new garage door installation can take place as soon as all hardware, including tracks, rollers, and garage door openers are all in place. If you are unable to handle the hardware installation on your own, the professionals can take care of the entire job.

Step Back and Let the Crew Work

When dealing with springs, as you noticed in the initial step of this entire process, you have to be very careful that you are doing the job as safe as you can with the right tools. Tension in springs has been known to cause serious injury when not handled correctly. Once your door is off and your hardware is installed, your new garage door installation crew can come in and place your new door and the rest of the parts. The best thing you can do at this point in the process is to simply stay away and let them work.
